This winter seems especially long and dreary. The month of January
is over! One month less of winter, but two more months to go!
We received several calendars as Christmas gifts and I'm turning my calendar page to February today.
This calendar has a Scripture verse at the top of each page and I read the verse every morning when I get up. The Scripture for February reads:
I think about the long road I have already travelled and how desperately I prayed this prayer at different times in my life when I wasn't sure and had to make difficult choices.
One could dismiss this as an ordinary occurrence or see the miraculous in it. I choose the latter. What often seems ordinary to us is actually quite extraordinary if we are open to it. We can learn from little children. Because they are so new to this world, they are always amazed at what we have come to accept as ordinary.
Someone has written so aptly:
"When we grow up we must never forget that hidden down deep within us is our forever inner child. Forever waiting, forever hoping that one day we shall remember it."
Recently, as I was looking at a snow globe which I put out every Christmas, I noticed something interesting. The small ornament of a girl reading a book which I had set beside the snow globe had a light shining on the page she was reading. If you look carefully at the photo below, you can see it on the open book.
Where did that light come from?
It seemed like a message of hope for me:
After some puzzlement I realized there was quite a simple explanation. The light from the ceiling was reflected through the globe onto the book.
Show me the right path ... Lead me by your truth.
Someone has written so aptly:
"When we grow up we must never forget that hidden down deep within us is our forever inner child. Forever waiting, forever hoping that one day we shall remember it."
Beautifully written. Thank you. And the Find The Poo book on the table looks hilarious.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Kathy. I did not notice that Poo book until you pointed it out! Ha Ha!!
ReplyDeleteThe light shining on the girl's book is indeed special -- and hopeful! Thank you.
ReplyDeleteHopeful is a good word, Dora. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteLove the light shining on the book. I would choose to see that as miraculous too! Love Sasha’s style!
ReplyDeleteYes, that Sasha girl!! What a whirl! Love her to bits!
DeleteTante Elfrieda, Thank you so much for your engaging posts. I have been receiving them for some time now and though I don't always open them, when I do, I am always drawn to catch up on the ones I haven't read. I love your openness to how so many things can "point to the Moon". Truth and wisdom show up in so many places. I also love the way your words bring me back to remember and appreciate my Mennonite faith heritage. Keep writing and I hope you and Onkel Hartmut continue to do well. Say hi to him from me.

How nice to hear from you, Ralph! Love it that you “catch up” eventually! We are doing well, and I will pass on your greetings!
ReplyDeleteI predict Sasha and her cousins and siblings will grow up to cherish stories and family history, Elfrieda, You are the light that shines on their books!
ReplyDeleteThat is my hope! Thanks, Shirley.
ReplyDeleteI like to see the shining light as miraculous too. So often we miss those little miracles in life if we are not open to them!
ReplyDeleteYour grandchildren are your blessings😍
Definitely, I am blessed by each of my eight grandchildren. I want to be a blessing to them as well! Thanks, Ruth!
ReplyDeleteRuth, I also want to thank you for the quote about the “hidden inner child”, which you had written on Hertha’s birthday card and I used in this post.
ReplyDeleteFrom Irma:
ReplyDeleteDid you and Hardy create the snow family? They are beautiful! I want a sign in my back yard with the title of the book on Sasha's pile of books "FIND THE POO!" 🤣
You are the second person to comment on that book, which I never even noticed when I wrote this post! (See first comment above). The snow grandparents were not created by us. Someone sent us a bunch of pictures of different snow people. I loved this one!
Delete"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path" as Psalm 119:105 records. The snow-globe image reflects that truth. I rely on God's Word to show me the way every day; I'm sure you do too, Elfrieda.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I think I'll name the snow people "Elfrieda and Hardy."
Sasha looks proud and happy to show off the stories you've recorded for her and the generations that follow. With my own copy now in hand, I could strike a similar pose. :-D
That is another good scripture, Marian! Do you have any ripped jeans you could wear while striking a similar pose to Sasha’s?
ReplyDeleteNone, my jeans are not ripped, but they are tight at the waistline - haha!
ReplyDeleteYup, that middle aged spread just keeps spreading!
ReplyDeleteI was struck by your sentence: 'What often seems ordinary to us is actually quite extraordinary if we are open to it.'. I've been working with Wilma Derksen to write my life story - which I was sure was not interesting to anyone but myself. But just today she also said 'everyone's story is interesting, you just need the confidence to tell it well.' Thank you for reinforcing that message today.
ReplyDeleteYou’re welcome, JohnDavid. I’m sure Wilma will be great to work with and I wish you all the best as you work on a story that is uniquely yours.
ReplyDeleteI often see your comments on Marian's blog but I'm not sure I ever stopped to look up your blog. I love your story book and the knowledge that you survived a refugee time and ended up in a beautiful country and giving so much back to that country and to all of us . thank you Elfrieda
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely surprise to receive your comment on my blog post, Melodie. Thank you! I feel as though we know each other because of Marian’s blog. I feel so sad about what is happening in Ukraine. My husband and I took a tour in 2011 and visited my former home. I couldn’t believe how lovely the city of Kiev was with all its towers and beautiful churches. To think of that being destroyed, makes me weep and feel sick at heart!
ReplyDeleteYour sharing makes it so much more real--and heartsick too. Hugs and prayers for you and so many.
